Emotion language term paper Essay Example for Free
Emotion language term paper Essay The differences between happiness, joy and gladness1.IntroductionThe concept of happiness can be characterized by three separate prototypes, which all refer to happiness but each approaches the concept of happiness from a slightly different meaning. The differences reveal mainly in the intensity of the emotion. Therefore it is very interesting how these differences appear in the English language. It is important to see these differences because our society is based on happiness and to reach the main goal of ones life it is good to understand the differences in the conceptualizations of happiness. 2.The three prototypesThe source domain of the three prototypes are taken from the class notes of Emotion Language, from the study of Zoltà ¡n Kà ¶vecses: Emotion concepts: from happiness to guiltA cognitive semantic perspective and definitions form answers.com. The first prototype is called joy which according to answers.com is an intense and especially ecstatic or exultant happiness and the expression or manifestation of such feeling. In other words, joy covers an immediate response of happiness. This means that this word is used to represent a sudden feeling that is self-enabling and comes from within . The next type is called the existential happiness which is a major value in life that people want to reach. This is a general feeling about being happy, therefore it is expressed by the word happiness. In Answers.com this word is described as an agreeable feeling or condition of the soul arising from good fortune or propitious happening of any kind; the possession of those circumstances or that state of being which is attended with enjoyment; the state of being happy; contentment; joyful satisfaction; felicity; blessedness. The last type of happiness is gladness, which is the less intense out of the three types. According to answers.com the word glad is experiencing or exhibiting joy and pleasure. This feeling can be explained in other words like gratifying, pleasurable, very willing, bright and cheerful. 3.The major differences in meaningAccording to the Internet joy and happiness are more commonly occur in the same context than joy and glad or happiness and glad so there are a number of studies and articles about happiness versus joy. The reason for this on the one part is that they have a close relation in meaning so it is not as univocal therefore many people does not recognize the differences or has improper thoughts about it. On the other part glad seems to be clearly terminated in meaning in the usage of the English language. Accordingly, there are many conceptualizations about the differences between joy and happiness on the Internet. On the one hand, in a forum about happiness, the opinion of a person named Suviko was: joy is something you feel shortly, temporary moment, a passing good feeling. Happiness is having that for longer period of time and it is more general, not as much targeted feeling . This explanation perfectly reflects the differences between joy and the existential happiness according to the study of Kà ¶vecses. But as it appears in some articles on the internet, this is not the only realization that is considered as the concept of happiness and joy. On the other hand, there is an essay about happiness versus joy which claims that happiness is fleeting and it comes from the fulfillment of ones desires, therefore happiness is dependent upon something while joy can be continuous and it comes from within . The main difference between the two conceptualization is the quantity of the feeling. In the first statement the duration of the feeling of joy takes less time than happiness while in the second statement joy lasts for longer. This proves that there are some differences in the conceptualization of the first two prototypes of happiness. Besides the differences the main idea about the intensity of the two prototypes reflects everywhere that happiness is more intense. In his study Vic Lebouthillier writes that happiness comes from circumstances like buying a new car or passing an exam while joy is rather appears as inner thankfulness for the constants of life such as nature, freedom, relationships with people, or through having faith in something larger than ourselves . It is also mentioned that happiness is an automatic reaction of people for the happenings of the outside world. In contrast, joy does notà come automatically, it is a learned reaction that people have to practice to live a complete emotional life. This points to the fact that the main point in most of the articles on the internet is based on this idea: It is important to understand that joy is an emotion that arises from within us and is not affected by the things that happen to us. Instead of looking for external things to provide happiness in our lives, we must strive to find the joy within. We must educate ourselves about joy and work to enhance it in our lives.Gladness is the less intense emotional feeling from the three prototypes of happiness. In The Free Dictionary webpage it is pointed out that Glad often refers to the feeling that results from the gratification of a wish or from satisfaction with immediate circumstances: Some folks rail against other folks, because other folks have what some folks would be glad of Henry Fielding . In another conceptualization gladness is rarely or never equivalent to mirth, merriment, gayety, and triumph, and it usually expresses less than delight . According to these statements, it can be asserted that gladness is not only the less intense but it also lasts for the less period of time. Another proof for this can be found in an essay of Margaret Paul where she discusses the differences between happiness and pleasure, and where pleasure is a synonym for gladness. She points out that pleasurable experiences can give us momentary feelings of happiness, but this happiness does not last long because it is dependent upon external events and experiences . 4.Differences in language usageThe English language is rich in the metaphors and metonymies about the three prototypes of happiness. The source domain of this section is from Zoltan Kà ¶vecses: Emotion concepts: from happiness to guilt A cognitive semantic perspective. Happiness (existential happiness)Most of the happiness metaphors found on the internet come from quotations, poems and a lower percent can be found in non literary texts. Using the mappings of Kà ¶vecses I listed some of the metaphors that I found with the help of Google:1. Happiness is a fluid in aà container: Happiness is a positive cash flow. Fred Adler2. Happiness is warm: Happiness is a warm gun The Beatles3. Happiness is insanity: Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination. Mark Twain4. Happiness is light: Happiness is a Swedish sunset it is there for all, but most of us look the other way and lose it. Mark Twain5. Happiness is up: trying to bump up our happiness Steven Winn6. Happiness is an animal: Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you Nathanial Hawthorne7. Happiness is a rapture: We pretended we could get drunk on root beer, and sometimes on those July nights, I think we were. Drunk with happiness. Lisa LibowitzJoyInterestingly I could find a larger number of metaphors or metonymies on the internet than about joy in non literary articles rater than literary texts. Therefore, in contrast to happiness, it was harder to find metaphors that could belong to the list of Zoltà ¡n Kà ¶vecses. 1.Joy is fluid in a container: then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy The Holly Bible (Isaiah 60:5-11)a place of joy and peace so full that you need nothing else2.Joy is being off the ground: Now I know when your house gets destroyed you wont be jumping for joy.3.Joy is warm: A blush of joy mantled on Lizzies face, and her heart swelled with happiness John Quine (The Captain of the Parish)4.Joy is vitality: As I watch my grandmother tickle and play with the kids, I see her eyes light up with joy. Jennifer Mallett5.Joy is opponent in a struggle: When her sick friend saw her, she was overcome with joy.6. Joy is a natural force: Ill flood your soul with the joy of cleanliness and the joy of discipline, which will redound to your good forever.7.Joy is a rapture: Inner success: Freedom from the identification with the mind and movement towards the ecstasy of the Truth . This will lead us towards our inner joy8.Joy is up: He who kisses the joy as it flies. Lives in Eternitys sunrise. William BlakeOne of the greatest joys known to man is to take a flight into ignorance in search of knowledge Robert Lynd9.Joy is light: The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide worlds joy. Henry Ward BeecherGladnessIt was the hardest to find metaphors or metonymies on gladness. I found that the word glad is often used in religious terms on the internet but these were not expressed by metaphors orà metonymies rather it refers to the loving of God and it follows that it is expressed on a very simple way. 1.Gladness is light: Our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks. Samuel JohnsonLight up your face with gladness Judy Garland2.Gladness is fluid in a container: A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles. Washington IrvingMay God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you. Irish Blessing3.Gladness is being in haven: Nations and men are only the best when they are the gladdest, and deserve heaven when they enjoy it. Jean Paul Friedrich Richter5.ConclusionSumming up the above, there are differences between the three conceptualizations of happiness in meaning and it also turned out that people are interested in these questions because it is important to understand these to live a happy life. We also saw that the linguistic usage of happiness and joy are very similar to each other they still have that slight difference in meaning. From this point of view gladness metaphors were less frequent and were not as similar to the other two. Iagos Mind in William Shakespeares Othello Essay -- Iago Psychology
Iago's Mind in William Shakespeare's Othello In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play Othello, the character of Iago takes on the role of a person warped within his own thoughts and feelings. Although people today have the benefit of psychology, back in the 1600s people with severe psychological disorders were left un-medicated and free to roam as citizens of society. Although Iago would have benefited from medication of today, in his mind he was the best, even though his own imagination got the better of him and fed his own misguided mentality. One of the best examples of this warped mentality is a conversation which Iago has with Othello mid-way through the play (3.3.160-66). As one analyzes Iagoââ¬â¢s words, the depth and complexity of his mental unrest ooze between the lines of this speech. And after careful analysis of the complexity of Iagoââ¬â¢s thoughts in this speech, Iagoââ¬â¢s psychological shortcomings of conceit and self-worth unravel before our eyes. At first glance, as Iago starts to verbally protect his reputation in the eyes of Othello, who has accused Iago of ââ¬Å"â⬠¦conspir[ing] against thy friendâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (3.3.147), Iago appears to be speaking of the nature of his reputation. But the lines can be analyzed on a much deeper level. When Iago says, ââ¬Å"Good name in man and woman, dear my Lordâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (3.3.160), the obvious first impression is that he is issuing the beginning of a statement about his own reputation. But, deep within the layers, this statement can be seen as a start in expressing how Iago feels about Othello having taken his reputation as a man and smashed it in the public eye. Iago mentions early in the play that, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦it is thought abroad that ââ¬Ëtwixt my sheets / He has done my officeâ⬠(1.3.369-70). By this earlier statement we s... ...y as a man, Iago ploys, ââ¬Å"Reputation is an idle and most false imposition, oft got without merit / and lost without deservingâ⬠(2.3.251-52). Hence, we wonder, was Iago speaking of Othello, or Cassio? Or both? Within this albeit short speech we get a strong glimpse at how tangled the web of Iagoââ¬â¢s mind can be. We get a feel for the depth of his psychological unrest and see how his mind can wrap quickly his feelings from one person to another in one quick jump of phrases. In these seven short lines we see Iagoââ¬â¢s self-concern about how others perceive him, we see his own fixation on how great he sees himself, and we see how he deceives himself. For me, Iagoââ¬â¢s psychosis intrigues me to read this play again and again since, on a very basic level, most of us can probably see parts of Iago within ourselves, no matter how deep within ourselves we have to look.

The Fisherman
He opens the poem using a first person narrative, mixed with a simple monosyllabic dialogue ââ¬Å"Although can see him tillâ⬠, in order to emphasis the simplistic nature of the fisherman, and Yeats adds to this effect by using a very regular rhyming pattern (ABA), and enjambment of the line in order to add a harmony and fluidity to the poem. As you carry on Yeats describes a lot of rural and naturalistic imagery ââ¬Ëthe freckled manâ⬠â⬠¦ Ere Condemner clothesâ⬠emphasizing the typical old simple, and hard working Irish man, and this could in fact be compared to the ââ¬ËIrish Airman'. Because both poems are connected to a specific place in Ireland, in The Fisherman', it is Condemner, when in the ââ¬ËIrish Airman' it is ââ¬Å"Kiloton Crossâ⬠, also in ââ¬ËThe Fisherman', notice how the man seems to form as part of the landscape ââ¬Å"grey place on a hill in grey', which shows how, not only is he wearing Condemner clothes, a local material, but seem s to merge with the natural environment.Yeats also uses a variety of different syntax's, in order to present the Irish people, and to present their different attitudes. From the simple syntax of the fisherman, ââ¬Å"cast his flies ââ¬Å"reflecting the quite, simple aspects of Ireland to here people live off the land, to which in Yeats' eyes is the perfect audience for him to write to. However the complex syntax ââ¬Å"craven manâ⬠which is used, reflects the confusion almost, on how Yeats is traveling from his ideal reality, then arriving upon the actual reality, to which he detests. From lines eight to twenty-five, it shows Yeats bitter attack and viewpoint towards contemporary Ireland, showing a huge change in tone, and truly contrasting the old Ireland with the new. It opens with some antithesis ââ¬Å"wise and simple. , really summing up the fisherman and Yeats' views on the old Ireland, using a full stop to allow the reader to reflect and almost proving how wisdom and sim plicity can sometimes go together.Carrying on there is another piece of alliteration ââ¬Å"my own race And the reality' which creates another piece of contrasting imagery, setting up Yeats for his rant against the real contemporary Ireland, ââ¬Å"the living men that I hateâ⬠, that quote referring to the greedy, UN cultured Dublin businessmen, to which Yeats' goes on listing all the types of people he dislikes, however cleverly juxtaposes these thoughts with ââ¬Å"the dead man that I lovedâ⬠who by many is Hough to be J. M Singe, although could be John O'Leary and therefore this poem could be compared to ââ¬ËSeptember 191 3' ââ¬Å"O'Leary in the graveâ⬠.Arriving at the end of that paragraph, Yeats sums up how he truly feels, ââ¬Å"beating down of the wise And great Art beaten downâ⬠, using repetition of the word beaten, to portray the brutality of the Irish people. He describes some of the appalled types of the Irish public, ââ¬Å"the clever man who cries â⬠using harsh alliteration in order to show his absolute contempt, which cuts into the lines, so Yeats really believes that the people he doesn't admire, are somehow overcoming the wisdom of who Yeats does admire, and again this could be compared to the ââ¬ËIrish Airman' due to the inverted line.Yeats however in the last stanza, goes back to the idea of the perfect audience and old rural Ireland, going into further detail about the fisherman ââ¬Å"sun freckled faceâ⬠and differs from the early part, which describes him, to be more Of a memory, rather than a pigment of Yeats imagination ââ¬Å"a man who is but a dreamâ⬠. Yeats uses monosyllabic wording there and anaphora's to strengthen the line and to create an idea of nostalgia.Yeats finally ends the poem with a very interesting few lines ââ¬Å"l shall have written him oneâ⬠¦ As cold and passionate as the dawnâ⬠, Showing how he wants to write a poem for the perfect audience, using antithesis of cold an d passionate, to show in my opinion how the poem is full of passion, yet tightly controlled, therefore making it enduring. That last line could also be compared to the ââ¬ËCold Heaven', as in the cold heaven there is a similar juxtaposition, between the cold sky and the rush of emotions.

Anthony Storrs A Very Short Introduction Essay - 978 Words
Anthony Storrs A Very Short Introduction is a book written about none other than Sigmund Freud. Born into the Jewish religion of which he had no interest in taking part of, Freud was an exceptional man who was very advanced, aware of his surroundings and stubborn. This man was a psychologist, doctor of medical and the Albert Einstein of psychoanalysis if I should say. Freud had a lot of theorys which everyone along with myself didnt quite agree with them all. Born on the 6th day of may in 1856, a man by the name of Sigmund Freud was not only smart; unique in his ways as a boy. He wouldnt even sit at the dinner table with his family for supper, that had to be done separately from them because during eating times, heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦During the years of 1885-1886 Freuds train of thought changed; he realized that in order for him to understand hysteria, he would have to study psychology and not neurology. He believed that the main characteristic of the neurotic person was a lack of normal sex, thats ironic for him to say because not one time threw out this book did I hear him speak on his own sex life, which would lead me to think he didnt have children if he hadnt spoken of them. Freud beliefs of young men between the age of four-five in the phallic stage being sexually interested in their mother and aggression towards the father is by far bizarre and disturbing to me. It seems that everything that had to do with neurology in somewhat way lead back to some form of sex or sexuality. In 1892 Freud stopped doing hypnotist practices and changed to free association in order to increase his understanding of neurosis theory. This man believed every symbol in ones dream had to do with something of sex, umbrellas were the symbols of the penis, purses were the symbols of the vagina. Truly dont understand how he came to that consumption but never the less he was unique in his own way of thought. In one instance Freud became upset when he realized that his patents were emotionally attached to him during their sessions, his first though was that it was an erotic attachment. Even though Freud

Effectiveness of Evaluation Processes Essay Example For Students
Effectiveness of Evaluation Processes Essay ââ¬Å"Program evaluation, as a concept and process of weighing, interpreting, and subsequently making judgments about data collected from multiple components of programming (Billings Halstead). While the Canterbury District Health Board as cited by Fineout-Overholt Johnston (2007), states that ââ¬Å"evaluation is assessment of both processes and outcomes of a program or implementation. Irrespective of the fact that evaluation is the final step of Evidence Base Practice process, it should be an ongoing process, necessary all through the stages of EBP, to ensure that quality of plans and process. Evaluation of the evidence, implementation process and itââ¬â¢s effectiveness, before the dissemination to stakeholders, is an imperative. Hence, to ensure a comprehensive evaluation, certain factors have to be considered in the methodology and variables as it applies to the evidence sought in the project, itââ¬â¢s application and purpose, in order to yield the desired outcome for dissemination. These factors include; reasons for the evaluation, having a time frame, choosing the appropriate time to evaluate, who the evaluators will be and having an evaluation design or framework. It is also important to select an evaluation instrument, consider the data collection process, itââ¬â¢s analysis, manner in which results are reported, how they will be used and the costs of evaluation. In consideration of my choice of Evidence Base Practice project, which is using diet and exercise to control glycaemia and reduce complications in type 2 diabetes patients. The implementation logistics involved the use of strategic methods, such as health education of participants by nurses, dietitians, using power point presentations, healthcare model, leaflets, fliers, display of diet foods, measurements of weight and blood sugars, how to calculate food calories and the invitation of diet and exercise companies, to help motivate the patientââ¬â¢s participation in the project. ââ¬Å"Consistent collection of data is crucial to a solidly documented program evaluation report, (Gard, Flannigan Cluskey, 2004). To achieve a reliable and valid evaluation of data collected, to generate evidence, a post structured questionnaire was developed in the following context: What is their attitude to health, wellbeing and the having to deal with type 2 diabetes, pre and post program. Effectiveness and usefulness of the methods adopted in the implementation process, Pre and post perception about diet and exercise, as a necessary intervention and itââ¬â¢s effectiveness in glycaemic control and prevention of diabetes complications. How motivated were they with the noted weight reduction, glycaemic control, provided incentives and cooperation received from diet and exercise companies and researchers. What role does culture, beliefs and socioeconomic factors, play in their choice of foods and itââ¬â¢s risk factors towards developing type 2 diabetes. Their overall impression of both positive and negative impact of the program. In addition, to evaluate the staffs participant experience, a meeting was organized in sessions to ensure everyoneââ¬â¢s input, also using a separate questionnaire, asking the following questions: How helpful, was the methods and program aids used in the process. Pre and post participation rate, taking into consideration, gender as a factor. Adequacy of project funds, resources and itââ¬â¢s effect on implementation their whole impression, attitude, perception about rating of the EBP choice and project processes. In evaluating the above implementation methods employed, using above questionnaires, in a survey, patients attitude is expected to increase positively towards health and wellbeing, as reflected in their commitment to their scheduled appointments and care as opposed to their noncompliant attitude before the program. This in turn will encourage a positive staffs attitude, morale and perception of an evidence base practice process. Further evaluation of patients and staffs perception on cultural influence, adequacy of project , materials and resources, will reveal a positive change in patients cultural beliefs about food types and their effects on glycemic control, compared to previously held beliefs by the Black Americans and Hispanics participants. Demonstrating strengths that motivated staffs and patients participation to yield the needed evidence and limitations, that will prompt further studies, thereby continuing evidence base practice process.
